This week I have been experimenting a lot with HTML and I’m going to be honest, I feel like I’m doing math. It’s a strange process where I feel lost in an area where I, normally, am most comfortable. Writing HTML is not super complicated (so far), but it’s tedious. I have to pay careful attention, everything is purposeful. It brings out a different side to writing. For me, what was once flowing is now full of pauses. It is a meticulous type of writing that makes you slow down and reflect. The influx of/amount of HTML confuses me a bit. I feel like I’m looking at a math problem. I have always had a love-hate relationship with math (I love statistics, have a ‘meh’ relationship with algebra, but loathe geometry). I have had to carefully approach this new way of writing. I do not want to let my negative feelings toward math spill over into HTML and CSS. I think it is a very important thing to learn (math is, too, but there has never been a moment in my life where I needed to find the sin, cos, and tan outside of a math class). I hope that I can become, at the very least, proficient enough to feel at ease.
This is my second or third time utilizing LinkedIn Learning, and I must say, I really need to take advantage of the classes on there! They are a great way to stay up to date or learn new skills. I would like to find some more tutorials on Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. I enjoyed Jen Simmons tutorial. It was straight forward and easy to follow. I was able to speed it up or slow it down depending on my understanding. I look forward to sitting down and writing the draft. I think that will be a fun, challenging exercise (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). I am concerned about loading in images since I had so much trouble last time, but I think that it will go alright in the long run. It really helps that we have time to experiment with these tools in class and ask questions. I am REALLY excited to learn and work with CSS. I hope I can make something resembling aesthetic, though my hopes are not too high. I wonder what the limitations are with CSS, if any. I also look forward to seeing what everyone else in my class comes up with!
Until next time!

It’s interesting that you relate html to math, since it used to be my favorite subject. Maybe that is why I am so intrigued by html and css. I definitely relate to not enjoying the tedium it has brought to my writing process. It might be better to write everything out in a google doc first, since it might make it easier to envision the final result. Besides the tedium, I have genuinely enjoyed watching how each piece constructs the final file. There is just something so novel about this whole process. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to the usual work I do.
I agree with the fact that HTML hasn’t seemed that (that being super relative to the context of this class) complicated but is super tedious. I like your comparison between math and HTML. Personally, it reminds me of the one time I had to take an accounting class which is really just the point where math and computer organization intersect. I also agree with your point that it’s not even that the HTML itself is complicated, it’s the sheer amount of it that’s confusing, especially since in the lesson we pretty quickly went from looking at how to make a simple heading to that full page of code for forms. Also, I too am trying to tell myself how much fun the next assignment will be haha.
