Verified, over the course of many weeks, has indeed come to its end. Verified has uncovered many blankets over the pondering questions of the internet over the course of just a handful of chapters, and after it all, the final chapter still managed to surprise me. A simple and completely understandable answer of the group, and one that surprisingly was something I didn’t even consider. Emotion.
As mortal humans, we experience large waves of emotion, not to say that a immortal wouldn’t, but rather that because we dictate your lives based on what we intake, we are going to be quite grand about how we react if it cup doesn’t fit the coaster out the gate.
Why emotion out all of things for Claufield and Wineburg nest their final thoughts? Simple, it is the essence of our decisions. Emotions can often lead us astray from the bigger picture when it comes to reading and might not spend as much time fact checking because they already had a strong opinion for it.
It was weird reading this, since we had already started on our verification projects, and mine was basically diving itself into a pool. Briefly, it was about a post that I reposted, to find out through research, it wasn’t necessarily the full truth. Before my project, I attached my emotions toward it, and now looking back and reading the chapter, it was quite eye opening for me.
Now, they aren’t saying that having emotions toward a topic isn’t wrong by any means, but rather that having direct emotions toward it can cause your viewpoint to be naturally skewed. This is important to avoid since the dynamic of the book itself is directed to walking away from the original viewpoint, and using key tools like SIFT and lateral reading to get a better understanding of what you are reading.
Avoiding overwhelming yourself, pushing opinions away, and having openness to being surprised are key aspects to consider before diving into a piece. If you start the research out with a decision already made, or at least not open to finding out if you could be wrong, you will never find what you are truly looking for.
Briefly, again, we went into Twwinnneeee, ooooo. It was so thrillingggg. Just kidding, it is quite cool and can’t wait to see where my group takes our 1980’s stock marketeer character as they jump from brand to brand. Twine is a game, but not the game we think of. It is an interactive text game, that can be full of pictures and audio, but is restricted to only reading and option making.
Anyways,
That’s all folks! (Theme music plays)

Hey! I really appreciate the time you took to break down the Emotion section of the reading. I also love that you tied that section back to SIFT and lateral reading. I can overlook the overarching message of a book or piece of writing, so this was a good reminder that the chapters are not modular. Your paragraph that details remaining open to what a piece of information might present you with is also a good reminder. I know that I’ve gone into an article too headstrong and dismissed something that turned out to be true more than a few times. Thank you for your breakdown and thoughts!
