There’s always been people who trust nothing and don’t develop a methodology of investigation, but there was a time where people had more trust in information channels. That being said, I’m not so sure that the periods where there was more trust in information channels was actually all that different than where we are now. Of course, the difference is the explicit hostility to expert opinion and intellectual engagement we see today. However, I don’t think the means by which people trusted information channels in prior periods was very rigorous at all. I think that many people just trusted what they were told and happened to listen to official information channels. While that worked out for a lot of things, it contained the danger of willful stupidity in the future because the trust itself was blind and shallow.

So, have we seen a decline in people’s ability to discern truth? I find it more reasonable to think that contemporary epistemological strategies have been long undermined. There hasn’t been a solid means of finding truth for the average person. We haven’t seen a shift in people’s ability to find truth; rather, we have seen the same audience, which lacks investigative strategy, change the sources that they blindly trust. The deeper issues within the education system and our values in intellectuality are laid much barer today than yesterday, but they were certainly present in previous times. I am optimistic, though. Now, we have an opportunity to apprehend the core issue and fix it because we are much less blind to the reality. It can get better.

I really love the opening statement of your post. It’s so true how tense being online is, especially regarding the news. It’s extremely overstimulating. I like how you then move on to how one instant we can see a video so violent and then the next something so light hearted, like a fan edit. Again, I agree 100% this is overstimulating. I like the point you make that simply trusting those who are credible is better for our brains, rather than trying to outsmart them. I’ve met so many people who have fallen victim to this, and watching them going insane from news consumption is saddening.
