When it comes to the reclamation of these terms that have been used to denigrate women, I think showcasing accounts like this one is what prevents women from giving up hope. Existing on the internet as a woman can often be a very isolating experience. The second their content criticizes or satirizes male content misogynists start to appear in droves. That’s what makes this reclamation so necessary. It empowers women to unite against a common enemy: misogyny.

In a place so wide, we can find community, and that is something really wonderful. With the article we read, that you mention, it got me thinking about the Klay Thompson and Megan Thee Stallion situation. So many people have rallied behind her, and I think that shows a reflection of the space people have found with her music and online persona. Yes, there is a bit of parasociality behind all of the noise, but when it comes down to it, it is really about appreciating and supporting someone that helped us reclaim those words, and created space for hot and sexy smart women, and all the other things she has contributed in her time as an artist.

Here’s how it goes in my head: A woman who is “not hot” says, “I am confident, I am wearing this particular thing, I am taking care of myself in this way.” This behavior or her looks or whatever are not “conventionally hot.” She says it is hot, other women agree with her, and so now it is “hot.” That is all fine, but I find it laughable to think that is empowering. It is basically saying, “Look! You don’t have to objectify me, I can do it myself.” Nobody is claiming this “hot” trend is moving the needle at all, but real empowerment would mean that we do not care if we are hot. We feel drawn to expand the definition of hotness BECAUSE that is the only way we can be seen as valuable. If you want to call something hot, do it! But we need to ask ourselves why we want so bad to be hot. Sure, it is fun to be hot, but especially in the climate right now, I think it is so important to not fall into this trap.

I feel like some of the funniest or most engaging content is just people reclaiming things that are being lobbed at them to cause harm or pain. Taking it and giving it a spin (as positive as it can be) switches it up ont the offender which gives it an empowering sentiment. Bringing in other examples of this really put the piece into persecptve for me and I understood better why women find a trend like this empowering.
