I’m curious if you’ve seen the lady crocheting AI patterns on TikTok to show how nonsensical they are. These AI “creations” are clearly a money grabbing opportunity to swindle some beginner. It’s sad to see creative fields get bombarded with AI content that only devalues the art form. Like when I scroll on Pinterest looking for some cool inspiration pics, the flooding of AI content has made what was once a joyful search into an endless dive into slop. It does concern me about what the future of hobbies will look like. For myself, as a baker, I see a lot of AI generated recipes that have the same flaw as the crochet instructions. Seeing as this seems to be a trend, it raises the question to what level of trust can be maintained on the internet.

It was great to read your in depth explanation of what exactly was wrong with this pattern. It is easy enough to me to realize that the image was AI, but only because of the backdrop. I have encountered this same issues with sewing patterns online. I don’t buy a lot of patterns, but so many were AI when I did look that I really never look online for patterns now because of this. I feel bad for people that are trying to get into these hobbies today. Imagine you aren’t able to tell that this was AI (maybe because you are a beginner, or maybe you are an older person). It would be so frustrating to try to follow these impossible instructions, and you might think it was because you are no good! This would be so discouraging for someone trying to get into these hobbies.

The fact that the very essence of the craft revolves around manual labor makes the use of AI here especially repulsive. On another note, I am not someone who has any interest or experience in crochet stuff. That being said, this piece is so wonderfully written. I was very invested reading through this. I was actually surprised when you pointed out the issue with the stitching in the advertisement. I looked at the photo of the rose for a few minutes trying to pick out something wrong with it, but I didn’t have the knowledge to even know what would be wrong. I figured there may be some inconsistency or smearing. I think that you’re 100% right about who these advertisements are meant to target. Someone like me would have never caught the issue with the stitching.

The beauty behind crocheting or any hand-made craft is that they are handmade! So it’s really disheartening to see this happen. I haven’t crocheted in such a long time and when I did I was much younger and just was kind of tying the yarn together. So it was nice to hear the perspective and insight from someone who is currently crocheting and how you were able to point out stitching issues within the image, but also to contrast it next to real hand-made crocheted pieces so I could see the difference.
